Today, you'll traverse the iconic Paso de Jama border crossing, reaching an altitude of 4,400 meters above sea level (MASL). As you ascend through the majestic Andes, prepare to be awestruck by breathtaking landscapes, snow-capped peaks, and dramatic vistas. This unforgettable journey offers a glimpse into the raw beauty of the world's second-highest mountain range. Upon reaching Chilean soil, we'll ensure a smooth transfer to your hotel in Calama, the main distribution center in the Antofagasta region. The rest of the day is yours to unwind and acclimate to the high altitude before embarking on further adventures in captivating San Pedro de Atacama.

DAY 11: ATACAMA DESERT

Embark on an action-packed day exploring two of San Pedro de Atacama's most captivating natural wonders: the El Tatio Geysers and the Moon Valley. Witness geothermal marvels and otherworldly landscapes in a single unforgettable excursion. Our adventure begins early. After breakfast, we depart at 5:00 AM for El Tatio, also known as "The Grandfather Who Cries" in the local Kunza language. Nestled high in the Andes Mountains, El Tatio boasts the title of the world's third-largest geyser field, surpassed only by Yellowstone National Park (USA) and Dolina Geyserov (Russia). As dawn breaks, witness the most spectacular display of these geothermal wonders. Between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM, the geysers erupt with a magnificent display of steam and hot water, reaching temperatures as high as 85°C.

On our return journey, keep your eyes peeled for the diverse wildlife that calls the Atacama Desert home. Spot graceful vicunas, llamas, rheas, and playful vizcachas amidst the unique desert flora. Giant cacti, hardy llaretas, and sprawling coirón grasses paint a picture of resilience in this arid landscape. We'll also make a stop at the charming village of Machuca, where time seems to stand still. This small, traditional community primarily relies on herding and cheese production, offering a glimpse into the local way of life. A short distance from Machuca lies the Laguna Salada, a captivating salt flat teeming with birdlife. Families of flamingos, ducks, and seagulls call this scenic landscape home, creating a vibrant spectacle. We anticipate arriving back in San Pedro de Atacama by approximately 12:30 PM, allowing you time to relax and recharge before our next adventure.

In the afternoon, at approximately 3:00 PM, we embark on a journey to the otherworldly Moon Valley. Our ancestors aptly named this desert landscape Las Salinas (The Salt Flats), but it's now known worldwide as the Moon Valley due to its striking resemblance to the lunar surface. Declared a Nature Sanctuary in 1982 and part of the Flamencos National Reserve, the Moon Valley offers a geological spectacle unlike any other. Especially captivating during sunrise and sunset, the valley's unique rock formations and dramatic landscapes are a photographer's dream. During your exploration, prepare to be mesmerized by captivating sights like the Quebrada de Ckari, a natural formation known as "The Three Watchers" by the indigenous people and "The Three Marys" today. Be awestruck by the imposing Dune Mayor, a majestic sand formation, and capture breathtaking panoramic views from various vantage points like Quebrada Honda, where the famous Coyote Stone lies hidden.

DAY 12: ATACAMA DESERT

Prepare to be enchanted by the natural beauty and cultural charm of the Atacama Desert on this full-day exploration of Altiplanic lagoons and salt flats.Our adventure commences at approximately 6:00 AM as we depart towards Toconao, a village known as "Lost Corner" in the local Kunza language. This charming town will captivate you with its simplicity, the tranquility of its people, and its unique climate. Immerse yourself in the village's cultural heritage, admiring its beautiful adobe architecture and traditional crafts.

Next, we journey to the Salar de Atacama, a vast salt flat. Here, we'll visit Laguna Chaxa, nestled within the Soncor Sector of the Los Flamencos National Reserve. This captivating lagoon is a haven for flamingo species, including the elegant Andean Flamingo. Keep your eyes peeled for these majestic birds wading gracefully in the shallow waters. Our exploration continues with a trip south towards the Andes, where we'll visit the small, traditional village of Socaire. Steeped in Andean culture, Socaire boasts a beautiful church and offers a glimpse into the region's agricultural way of life. We then ascend into the heart of the Andes, reaching an altitude of approximately 4,200 meters above sea level (MASL). These lagoons are part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve and offer a haven for diverse birdlife.
